On our visit to Lapland a couple winters ago, we were staying in the village of Kemi. We went for a walk one afternoon, with no expectations and then stumbled across the frozen Bothnian Bay!!

We could walk right across the frozen landscape and to us, it was a wild experience and something we’ve never seen before. The locals even make roads across the ocean during the winter months…

The ocean is super accessible from town making it one of the best places on earth to experience this. Plus, you can also join an icebreaker boat tour from here, which is exactly what we did.

Autumn/Winter is the perfect time to explore the Baltics. It’ll be much quieter, and if you’re travelling around in December, then the Christmas markets here are magical.

This is without a doubt the most underrated and affordable corner of Europe. We spent only £500 in 9 days, including food and accommodation, which was solely Airbnb’s.

We interrailed through the region, in recent years the rail network has been improved meaning it’s even easier to travel through the Baltics via train 🚞

9-10 days is an ideal amount of time to spend here, the three capitals of the Baltics are small and easily explored in a few days. But also allow for a day here and there to explore outside of the cities 🫶🏼
